Labour win all three seats in Trowbridge

Trowbridge Ward (of which St Mellons is a part) election results

Wales Online

In the 2008 election Lib Dem Geraldine Grant edged one of the seats while the party were also just 17 votes from clinching the other two.

Labour strengthened its grasp on Trowbridge by holding its two existing seats and stealing the third from the Lib Dems.

But there was to be no repeat during this year’s elections as Labour trounced all those who stood in their way – winning each of the three seats by a minimum margin of 992.

The three Lib Dem candidates endured a torrid night polling just 887 votes between them – 210 fewer votes than the Welsh Conservatives polled (1,097).

Labour polled a combined total of 4,534.

Ralph Cook, who along with Michael Michael and Monica Walsh, said his Lib Dem rivals were paying the price for the decisions made by national party leader Nick Clegg.

“It looks like he [Mr Clegg] made a huge mistake by going into government with the Tories,” he said.

“I always focus on local issues, I do not bring national issues into local politics because they are hardly ever relevant.

“I focus on the issues that matter to people in the ward and I try to support them in addressing those issues.”

He added: “Education is a massively important issue at the moment for the council, it [the authority] is in a right mess.

“My only fear is that it’s going to be a lot worse than we’ve been lead to believe but we’ll find out soon enough.”

Luke Jenkins, seven, loses fight to live life with half a heart

Luke Jenkins, who died this month

THE parents of a seven-year-old boy born with half a heart have spoken movingly about how their “little fighter” finally lost his battle to live.

Luke Jenkins, who suffered from a single ventricle heart – a type of congenital heart disease – which meant he only had two heart chambers instead of the usual four, died earlier this month from complications following an operation.

It was not the first time the youngster had experienced difficulties after a procedure having been left paralysed from the neck down in 2009.

Yet on that occasion Luke confounded doctors when he regained his mobility to the extent that he even took part in his school’s sports day.

His parents Stevie Jenkins and Faye Valentine, of Wicken Close, St Mellons, Cardiff, have paid tribute to their “inspirational” son who despite his condition was said to have always had a smile on his face.

Stevie said: “He was just a typical little boy who just didn’t let anything stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

“He was so determined, he didn’t have a care in the world. Doctors described him as the perfect patient because he didn’t complain about anything.”

The couple were made aware of Luke’s condition while Faye, 27, was pregnant. They said they were offered the chance to terminate the pregnancy but chose not to despite knowing Luke faced a life spending time in and out of hospital.

“We always knew that there was a possibility that his heart could have failed at any time but we accepted that,” Faye said.

“When we were told about his heart during the scans we were told he may not make it when he was born and they gave us a choice but we couldn’t do that.

In total, Luke had 10 major operations in an attempt to improve his quality of life.

Stevie, 30, described the youngster as “extremely brave” and said he was never fazed by the ordeals he faced.

He was held – along with co-defendants Adrian Wall, 49, and Liiban Nursharif, 30 – on Tuesday after officers swooped on homes in Cardiff, London and Coventry.

Get down to the Hub!

St Mellons Hub (where library and council services are successfully combined in one building) won the National Libraries Day prize draw!

They are looking forward to our special day with storyteller Neil Griffiths and our lucky customers on May 5th between 2-4pm! All welcome!

They hold a Story-time session at 1.30pm - 2.30pm on a Wednesday and a Rhyme-time session at the same time on a Friday for pre-school children. Very informal and friendly and a great way to introduce young children to the joy of books and libraries.

Cardiff Council's St Mellons Hub has won the services of a professional storyteller and award-winning author for a day in a National Libraries Day prize draw.

The prize, sponsored by one of the main library suppliers in the UK, Greswell, means that children at the Hub can expect a visit from storyteller, Neil Griffiths, a former primary head teacher.

He is also the inventor of the multiple award-winning "Storysack", a collection of themed props, soft toys, activities and parental guides designed to make books fun and encourage children and adults to enjoy reading together.

Neil will be visiting the Hub on 5th May and will be running sessions for children, parents and staff on the day.

Customer service advisor, Gail Jones, who entered the Hub for the draw said: "I was over the moon when we won as having the experience of seeing and listening to a really good storyteller can help bring books to life and spark a love of reading that can bring benefit for years to come."

The Hub already offers weekly story-time and rhyme-time sessions on Wednesday and Friday afternoons for toddlers, as well as an after school and Saturday session with ‘Play Aloud' for older children.

Cardiff Council also promotes reading through its Reading Power campaign which engages children and young people, and communicates the message that reading is fun.

Elspeth Morris, Cardiff Council's Operational Manager for Libraries, said: "The importance of having good reading skills and enjoying books cannot be underestimated. Reading boosts knowledge, understanding and encourages an active imagination."

"The St Mellons Hub offers a wealth of reading material on all manner of topics and our staff are really looking forward to Neil's visit to help encourage more youngsters to read."
